Old Buildings or New Housing

When looking to purchase affordable housing many people face a dilema; purchase an old building, then renovate and modernise to bring it into the 21st century, or choose to buy a new build structure full of all of the mod-cons one might expect. There are many things that you need to consider when purchasing affordable housing, firstly how large is your family and will you require space for expansion in the future? Many modern housing developments are initially generous on space but should you ever find yourself in a position where you need to extend your property you may run into problems, however older buildings are often ripe for development and can be extended past their original dimensions by a large margin.

Affordable housing does not always mean new buildings, many developers also purchase and renovate older structures then sell them on, however as you may expect older affordable housing will require more maintenance than a newer build. Exactly how much cannot be quantified as it depends on a whole myriad of factors, however you should always ensure that you can afford the upkeep of older affordable housing. One thing that draws many people to newer affordable housing that has just been constructed is that they are clean and new; a veritable blank canvas for you to put your mark on and perfect for moving straight in.

Older affordable housing may require work and modernisation before you are completely comfortable there, in fact many old buildings are a constant project with work taking place over many years to bring the house up to modern standards. If you are environmentally concious then you will also face a dilemma; should you purchase old or new affordable housing? A new affordable building will have the advantage of being produced with sustainable materials and it will often be packed with energy saving, eco friendly technologies. However if you are looking for a project and are keen to experiment and install your own environmentally friendly technologies then retrofitting an older structure may prove more rewarding in the long run.

Despite all of these words of wisdom by far the most important thing to consider when purchasing affordable housing is your own comfort; will you be happy and satisfied in a new building in an affordable housing development, or an old terraced house in a city, or renovating a broken down farmhouse? Whatever you desire and feel most comfortable in should count for an awful lot in the decision making process, a house is there to be lived in and enjoyed and affordable housing is no different, be sure you choose somewhere to live where you and your family can make a home.
