There is a modern movement that involves the creation of affordable eco-friendly housing, it has grown in popularity in recent years due to an increased interest in environmental issues. To sum things up rather neatly eco-friendly affordable housing utilises construction methods that are either of benefit to or not harmful to the environment and the natural world. There are many aspects to a good, affordable eco-friendly housing design, and one of the main unique features about their construction is the use of locally sourced renewable materials.
Eco-friendly housing always tries to use locally sourced materials as cutting down on carbon emissions is a main goal of the environmental movement, so if things can be sourced from a short distance away rather than half way across the globe then it will reduce the amount of exhaust gasses released into the atmosphere during transit. The material for eco-friendly housing also must be from renewable sources; if one is trying to create a "green" house it makes no sense to remove, for example, ancient trees from the environment that will take hundreds of years to grow back. Instead many eco-friendly housing projects focus on utilising things such as wood sourced from quick growing trees so that it can be replaced as quickly as it is utilised by the building industry.
Another facet of the eco-friendly housing movement is to utilise more natural products rather than synthetics. For example, many people are choosing to use everything from recycled newpaper pulp through to lambs wool and even straw to insulate their homes rather than opting for traditional synthetic insulation. This is important because synthetics will never decay or degrade when they are eventually removed so it is vital to safeguard future generations and ensure that they are not bogged down with our waste. There are many new technologies being utilised to ensure housing projects are now eco-friendly; many use solar panels for either electricity generation or to heat water for taking a shower or a bath.
The latter method is particularly efficient and many new eco-friendly housing projects are choosing this method of heating hot water in lieu of a traditional boiler. Many eco-friendly housing developers are also utilising water conservation technologies that recycle water in various ways, such as collecting rainwater and using it for non drinking supplies. Obviously almost all eco-friendly housing developments feature low energy lightbulbs along with non toxic natural paints that are lead and toxin free.
